The Power of Environment: A Reflection on Growth and Reinvention

About a month ago, I was part of a women’s group where someone shared something that deeply resonated with me. She spoke about leaving a toxic environment in order to spread her wings and rebuild herself. As soon as I heard those words, they stayed with me.

It made me pause and reflect on my own journey.

Looking back, I had removed myself from a certain environment—not fully realizing at the time that it was that space that had been holding me back. I didn’t know how much of my potential had been stifled, how much of my thinking had been clouded, until I was out of it.

Only after stepping away did I start to feel like me again. My thoughts became clearer. I could finally dream freely, try new things, and chase my goals without the invisible weight that had been holding me down.

That environment had made me feel small. It had subtly convinced me that I wasn’t capable, that I couldn’t grow, or do more. The energy there didn’t allow me to think expansively or believe in myself fully.

Leaving it wasn’t a dramatic act of reinvention—it was a unintentional quiet decision, one I didn’t fully understand at the time. But it changed everything.

Today, I look back on that season as a powerful learning curve. It taught me the importance of being intentional about the spaces I occupy, the people I surround myself with, and the energy I allow into my life.

I truly believe I’m now exactly where I’m supposed to be—right in the timing and place that God intended for me. And I’m learning to trust that.
